What "mid cap" means in India

A mid-cap stock is a company that ranks roughly between 101st and 250th by market capitalisation in India. The classification is not our opinion — it follows NSE's index methodology (the Nifty Midcap 150 universe) and SEBI's framework, which defines large cap as the top 100 companies, mid cap as the 101st–250th, and small cap as 251st and beyond. The table above is every name that currently falls into that middle band, with its sector and, where we track it, a live price. It is a map for research, not a ranking and not a "best stocks to buy" list.

How mid caps behave — risk and return, neutrally

Mid caps sit between the steadier large caps and the more speculative small caps. As a factual observation, they have historically been more volatile than large caps and less so than small caps — their prices can move more sharply in both directions. Some are large caps in the making; others may slip back to small cap. Higher potential growth has historically come with higher risk and lower liquidity. None of that makes mid caps "better" or "worse" than other sizes in the abstract — it simply describes a different risk-return profile that suits different goals and horizons.

NSE reviews its indices periodically — typically twice a year — and because mid caps occupy the middle band, they see the most movement: a strong performer can graduate to large cap while a faltering one can drop to small cap.
