What "small cap" means in India

A small-cap stock is a company ranked 251st or beyond by market capitalisation in India. The classification is not our opinion — it follows NSE's index methodology (the Nifty Smallcap 250 universe for the largest of them) and SEBI's framework, which defines large cap as the top 100 companies, mid cap as the 101st–250th, and small cap as 251st and below. The table above is small-cap names on that basis, with sector and, where we track it, a live price. It is a map for research, not a ranking and not a "best stocks to buy" or "multibagger" list.

How small caps behave — risk and return, neutrally

Small caps are the smallest and least liquid of the three bands, with the thinnest analyst coverage. As a factual observation, they have historically been the most volatile — prices can swing sharply in both directions, and a position can be harder to exit when the market falls. The flip side is that the band contains many fast-growing companies, and a successful small cap can deliver outsized growth over time. But higher potential return has historically come with materially higher risk, including the risk of permanent loss in weaker names. This describes a risk-return profile, not a verdict: small caps are neither "better" nor "worse" than large or mid caps in the abstract.

How the list is built and why it changes

Membership comes from the index constituents, refreshed as of 2026-06-11. NSE reviews its indices periodically — typically twice a year — and small caps see the most churn: strong performers graduate to mid cap, while others drop out of the index. So this list is a snapshot, not a permanent roster, and it is representative rather than exhaustive — hundreds more small caps trade outside the index. Before relying on any entry, confirm current constituents on the NSE and study the company's own filings, liquidity and valuation.
